Moderate to Strenuous 5 to 13-mile hike from
Carvers Gap. This hike is split into two parts. The first part is a
moderate 5-mile round trip that goes north on the AT from Carvers Gap,
then on the Grassy Ridge trail. Plenty of beautiful panoramic views and
Angora goats on the balds. After returning to Carvers Gap, ambitious
hikers will head south on the AT to the old Cloudland Hotel site, then
we’ll take the trail to Roan High Bluff overlook. Less ambitious hikers
can shorten this second part from 8 to 3 miles by driving from Carvers
Gap to the Cloudlands site (about a 2.5 mile drive to the parking lot),
then hiking to Roan High Bluff from there. Leave Long John Silvers** at
8 AM. If you have questions or would like to be met in Elizabethton
contact the leader Joel Zabel: 423-926-3587 or joyjoelz@yahoo.com.

Strenuous 10-mile Virginia hike on the brim of
Brumley Ridge starting at Hidden Valley Lake north of Abingdon. We reach
The Great Channels, a new state forest, which is a maze of eroded rock
walls believed to be 420 million years old, and walk through the
channels they create. A fire tower stands at this location also. Leaving
this area we will walk down hill on an old logging road to vehicles for
the return to Hidden Valley Lake. A few area residents may join us. This
will be a combined hike with the Mid Appalachian Highlands Hiking Club.
A $3.00 gas donation per person for the van that returns us to our cars

Moderate to strenuous 8-mile hike on the
northwest slopes of Unaka Mountain, including crossing the Unaka
Mountain Wilderness Area. This hike begins and ends on TN Rt. 107 in
Limestone Cove, which is east of Erwin. We ascend Unaka Mt. on the
Stamping Ground Trail for an elevation gain of 2,200 feet. The trail
appears to be no longer maintained by the Forest Service, but is still
in reasonably good condition. Before reaching the crest of Unaka Mt we
will intersect and turn northward onto the Limestone Cove Trail, then
descend back down to a point on highway 107 only two miles from our
starting point. The surrounding forests are mainly hardwood with a few
partially open views in the winter. Bring warm clothing for the maximum
elevation of 4,500 feet on Stamping Ground Ridge. Since it is a short
drive from Johnson City, meet at 9:00 AM at Long John Silver’s at
