Johnson City Hikers Club Schedule –October to December 2008

 

Guests are welcome on all hikes, and at meetings. We request that newcomers select hikes within their capabilities. If in doubt, contact hike leaders for more information about terrain. Please bring rain gear, food, plenty of water, gas money and appropriate clothing on all hikes. We request that no pets be brought on hikes. Persons interested in joining the Johnson City Hikers Club and receiving the schedule should contact Faye Guinn at 753-4072. Check the website for hike changes: www.jchikers.org

Strenuous 14-mile hike in the Shining rock Wilderness starting at the Daniel Boone Boy Scout camp on Trail 146 and hiking on a number of trails to Road 816. Questions? Suggestions for those planning to go-extra water, extra food, a warm jacket, and this late in the year a flashlight in your pack. Plan on a long day!

Moderate to Strenuous 5 to 13-mile hike from Carvers Gap. This hike is split into two parts. The first part is a moderate 5-mile round trip that goes north on the AT from Carvers Gap, then on the Grassy Ridge trail. Plenty of beautiful panoramic views and Angora goats on the balds. After returning to Carvers Gap, ambitious hikers will head south on the AT to the old Cloudland Hotel site, then we’ll take the trail to Roan High Bluff overlook. Less ambitious hikers can shorten this second part from 8 to 3 miles by driving from Carvers Gap to the Cloudlands site (about a 2.5 mile drive to the parking lot), then hiking to Roan High Bluff from there. Moderate to Strenuous 10-mile hike on Bays Mountain. We’ll hike along the mountain ridges to the fire tower for 360 degree views and lunch, then finish following trails along the reservoir. Strenuous 10-mile Virginia hike on the brim of Brumley Ridge starting at Hidden Valley Lake north of Abingdon. We reach The Great Channels, a new state forest, which is a maze of eroded rock walls believed to be 420 million years old, and walk through the channels they create. A fire tower stands at this location also. Leaving this area we will walk down hill on an old logging road to vehicles for the return to Hidden Valley Lake. A few area residents may join us. This will be a combined hike with the Mid Appalachian Highlands Hiking Club. A $3.00 gas donation per person for the van that returns us to our cars please. This is a camera day! Cindy Strang has invited us to come for a weekend hike near her home at Pickett State Park. There are cabins to rent, a campground and an invite from Cindy to bring a pad and sleeping bag and sleep on her floor. On Saturday the 8th we will hike on the Hidden Passage Trail with a side trip to a waterfall, about 14 miles total. On the 9th we will hike the Twin Arches Loop (about six miles) before our drive home. Some will be leaving from Long John Silvers** at 1 PM Friday the 7th. Strenuous 9-mile hike from Little Stony Falls to Edith Gap on Chief Benge Scout Trail near Norton, Virginia. Very dry weather is the only opportunity to do this hike. Strenuous 12-mile hike in the Smokies on the Thomas Divide, Kanati Fork and Sweat Heifer Trails to the AT and on to Newfound Gap parking. Hike No. 2 Moderate 7.5 mile hike in the Townsend Area of the Smokies. We will cross (wade) the Little River on this hike. Moderate to strenuous 8-mile hike on the northwest slopes of Unaka Mountain, including crossing the Unaka Mountain Wilderness Area. This hike begins and ends on TN Rt. 107 in Limestone Cove, which is east of Erwin. We ascend Unaka Mt. on the Stamping Ground Trail for an elevation gain of 2,200 feet. The trail appears to be no longer maintained by the Forest Service, but is still in reasonably good condition. Before reaching the crest of Unaka Mt we will intersect and turn northward onto the Limestone Cove Trail, then descend back down to a point on highway 107 only two miles from our starting point. The surrounding forests are mainly hardwood with a few partially open views in the winter. Bring warm clothing for the maximum elevation of 4,500 feet on Stamping Ground Ridge. Strenuous 11.5-mile hike on the AT. We will start the hike about 25 miles north of Mount Rogers where the AT crosses VA 81 at the town of Groseclose. Partnership and Chatfield shelters are on this section. Elevation gain to 3,900 feet. This is a first time hike for our club. Leader: Marcia Pruner 276-883-4131. Leave Long John Silvers** at 8 AM.

Our usual week before Christmas hike from the Jonesborough Post Office to Persimmon Ridge Park. This will be about 6 easy miles after we do the wooded trails in the park. If we want we can have lunch in one of the little places in Jonesborough as we return. Meet at the Jonesborough Post Office at 9 AM. Leader: Howard Guinn 423-753-4072.

Everyone has heard about the fire on Buffalo Mountain. This will be a workday there. It will be a joint effort between the Mid Appalachian Highlands Club and us. Howard will borrow some tools from the Old Timers Hiking Club for us to use. We hope to help open the Lone Oak Trail, which our long time member Tom Dosser built. Leader: James Price 423-213-0042.
